About the GRRS
The Greater Rochester Rose Society is celebrating
its 100th anniversary. The GRRS was founded in 1919 to help its members and others learn more about the beloved rose. The GRRS is an affiliate chapter of the American Rose Society, which also provides a wealth of information about growing roses successfully. Our chapter meets most months, and our meetings include a variety of programs about topics such as rose care, gardening advice, and rose show techniques. The GRRS is a featured participant at the annual Maplewood Rose Celebration, and we also participate in two workshops at Maplewood Park and Rose Garden. In the fall, rosarians discuss how to winterize rose bushes, and in the spring, we take part in the hands-on pruning session. In addition, our chapter usually participates in annual spring garden shows at Rochester-area nurseries and garden centers. At all of these events, our more experienced members answer questions from the public and distribute information about planting rose bushes, their fertilizing needs, and solving pest and disease problems. GRRS typically hosts a rose show in June, when our blooms are at their peak, The event is free and open to the public, and the date varies, but is announced in advance on our website and Facebook. Members also participate in rose conventions and rose shows held by other societies both in NY state and beyond. Membership in the GRRS is open to anyone with an appreciation of roses. Our members include long-time rose-lovers and novice gardeners. Some have hundreds of rose bushes, while most have a dozen or two. Some grow roses to exhibit in shows; others grow roses simply for their beauty and fragrance. Visitors are welcome to attend a meeting. We meet from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of most months at the First Unitarian Church of Rochester, 220 Winton Road South, Rochester, NY 14610. (We stay inside in January and February; in July we go to a member's home for a potluck picnic and a rose garden tour.) Membership costs $25 a year for individuals, while membership for additional household members is $5 each per year. |
There is simply the rose; it is perfect in every moment of its existence.
Ralph Waldo Emerson A flower unplucked is but left to the falling, and nothing is gained by not gathering roses. Robert Frost. If the rose puzzled its mind over the question how it grew, it would not have been the miracle that it is. J. B. Yeats |
I don't know whether nice people tend to grow roses or growing roses makes people nice.
Roland A. Browne We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses. Abraham Lincoln A profusion of pink roses bending ragged in the rain speaks to me of all gentleness and its enduring. William Carlos Williams |
Join us in the Greater Rochester Rose Society.
We're a friendly bunch, and we enjoy learning almost as much as we enjoy gardening. |
